The march of progress is claiming the BMW iX, as newer models roll into the brand’s EV lineup.
Even as headwinds continue to hit electric vehicles from lower sales to model cancellations, BMW is moving forward with its ‘Neue Klasse’ models. New models like the BMW i3 sedan and iX3 SUV are hitting the scene, and that means older EVs like the i4 and now the iX are on their way out. A BMW Blog report dropped the news on BMW axing the U.S. allocation for the iX, though that SUV will continue to be sold in global markets, at least for now.
While acknowledging its status as a technological showcase for the brand’s modern electric vehicles, it cites the next generation of models, powered by BMW’s ‘Gen6’ driving technology, as the reason for cancelling the iX (and the i4, for that matter). As the new cars hit showrooms, the older models are simply redundant, as they pack more dated tech and electrical architectures.

By contrast, the Neue Klasse-based i3 and iX3 sport 800-volt architectures, allowing for much faster DC fast-charging. Beyond that, they also have built-in Tesla-style NACS ports for easier compatibility with Tesla Superchargers. And although the iX did sell decently for what it was (12,587 units found buyers in 2025, as well as 15,383 in 2024), we’ll have to see how Munich’s latest EVs make an impression on American consumers. The Gen6 battery technology we’re seeing in the i3 and iX will similarly make its way to the new 7 Series soon, as well.
The Neue Klasse BMW iX3 is supposed to arrive this summer, with the iX3 50 xDrive set to hit showrooms first. The lower-spec, more affordable iX3 40 sDrive/xDrive, in either single- or dual-motor configurations, should land early next year as 2027 models.
